Indian Administrative Service i.e. IAS Officer is the premier administrative civil service in India. His role is crucial in key strategies of policy and its execution. Selection of IAS is conducted by UPSC ( Union Public Service Commission ) under civil service examination . The salary, pay scale, pay band, perks and privilege decided by pay commission. The pay scale for the IAS Officer or collector has  been devised by the commission from time to time.

Basic Pay of IAS officer

IAS Officer salary structure consists of different Pay Scales: 
Junior Scale, Senior Scales, Super Time Scale, Above Super Time Scales etc. Each of the pay scale further consists of different pay bands.
  1. Junior Scale: Pay Band: Rs 15600-39100 plus Grade Pay Rs 5400
  2. Senior Time Scale : Pay Band: Rs 15600-39100 plus Grade Pay Rs 6600
  3. Junior Administrative Grade: Pay Band: Rs 15600-39100 plus Grade Pay Rs 7600
  4. Selection Grade: Pay Band: Rs 37400-67000 plus Grade Pay Rs 8700
  5. Super Time Scale : Pay Band: Rs 37400-67000 plus Grade Pay Rs 10000
  6. Above Super Time Scale
  • Rs 37400-67000. Plus Grade Pay of Rs 12000.
  • The Apex Pay Scale of Rs 80000 (fixed). No Grade Pay.
  • Cabinet Secretary Grade of Rs 90000 (fixed). No Grade Pay.

IAS officers may also be entitled for HRA (40% of Basic or official accommodation), DA (the DA has increased from 72% in 2012 to 107% of of Basic Salary in 2015) and so on, TA etc. DA is revised on half yearly (January and July every year) basis depending on the inflation index. One can also expect further increase in package once the 7th pay commission reports are accepted and may revised to fresh percentage also.

The central government employees are one of the most well-paid government servants in the entire bureaucracy and IAS officers lie at the top of this pyramid. However, as mentioned in the 7th Pay Commission report, the Government Employees are paid as per their position and the associated pay scale. The Government Pay Scale is not the end salary but merely denotes the maximum and minimum salary on offer to the officer for that particular grade. The Pay scale is further supported by Grade Pay, DA, HRD and several other benefits.

These newly announced pay scales of 7th Pay Commission are not the full or in-hand salary of an IAS officer. The pay scale is used to determine the basic pay of the employee on the basis of which they are entitled to allowances and entitlements like Dearness Allowance(revised every year as per inflation index) and House Rent Allowance (generally considered as 40% of Basic) as well as TA.
